Center for Sports Behavioral Health

We are the experts in all things behavioral health throughout  collegiate sports.

Student-athletes live in a world full of high demands both athletically and academically, and aren't always given all of the assets they need to succeed. College athletes have reported that they spend up to 42 hours per week on athletic-related activities, and up to another 41 hours per week on academics. By spending this amount of time on required athletic and academic requirements, many times, athletes' mental well-being is pushed to the side.
According to the NCAA, college campuses are currently seeing an increase in the number of student-athletes experiencing mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. In fact, one fourth of all collegiate athletes will experience a mental health crisis during college, and the same amount meet the criteria for "clinically significant" depression.
It was believed in the past that being an
athlete was a factor to exempt these individuals from mental health issues, however, it is now believed to be a predicting factor of behavioral health needs, due to the high demands of the collegiate student-athlete lifestyle. By not placing the right amount of focus and the right mental health professionals in place, student-athletes are susceptible to anxiety, depression, and other mental health concerns.
As an athletic department, coaches, and/or collegiate staff, it is important to ensure that the behavioral health services being provided to student-athletes are sufficient for them throughout their collegiate career. Once student-athletes are provided with mental health services, it is proven that they are able to perform better athletically and academically. Having these high standards for athletic programs is the key to success, both on and off the field.
